Sarah Wood
Great Britain
2015 | 0:22:20

In a diaristic film that reflects on archives, surveillance and history making, Sarah Wood asks, 'We invented cinema, but in an age when we can move more and see more than any other point in history, why have we become so watchful and so performative?

Jury Declaration:
I am a spy brings us to the important question of the future of data and information, throught analogies between, nature and the machine, freedom and ownership, in the past and in the present.
Director's Comment:
'Thank you so much for this wonderful honour. I'm not only excited for myself but also that the ideas in I Am A Spy made a difference to the audiences who watch the film. We live in difficult times here in the UK. The government is about to pass another law that will permit the state to watch us even more closely than they do already and which will enable the authorities to intervene when we think and discuss ideas, before any action has actually been made. Watching this watchfulness is vital. Film festivals are some of the only freed up spaces left to us and it's great to be honoured by Signes de Nuit whose inspiring project is to open up cross border dialogue. Thank you so much and I hope you have a great night in Lisboa. I'm sorry not to be with you.'
