Tehran, June 2013. The Iranians are preparing to elect the new
President of the Islamic Republic. Massed in front of their TV, they
comment the presidential campaign broadcast by
national channels : the jokes that accompany the parade of candidates
betray the spectator's disappointment. After the 2009 riots, the
Iranian people there still believe in politics?
In the privacy of their homes, facing the images relayed by satellite
feed, state propaganda, images of the West, Egypt or Syria, women and
men freely talk about their hopes, their anger and
their fears.

|
Jury Statement :
Télécommande is an unexpectedly mesmerizing film that takes us inside
the family home in Iran, with the perspective of sitting on the sofa
and watching daily TV alongside a family. The discussion, over time,
reflects on access to information, censorship, security and the
economy within the show of democracy in Iran over the course of two
Presidential elections. |

Aneta ‘rebelled to the max’ at the age of nineteen and wound up in prison for murder. Nine years later, her daily routine takes her from behind the walls of the prison to a care home for the elderly. One of the residents, Helena, has been ill ever since infancy. She is fascinated by the phenomenon which is Aneta. In her opinion, the young woman has everything she could want for. And so Helena, whose knowledge of the world has come “from the windows of hospitals and coaches”, avidly asks Aneta about her life. A test awaits Aneta… and help will come from Helena.

Jury Statement :
A very well structured film that beautifully shows the character of an
inmate who has to deal with her past incapacity to reign over her
aggressive feelings. The film points to the tradition of 35mm
documentary filmmaking which is nearly forlorn but still precisely
deals with time in film. |
Director Statement :
Your generous consideration of our film as well as the award is a
huge honor for whole "Starting Point" team. Thank you to jury and
organizers of "The Signes de Nuit Festival". Once again I have to
thank Aneta, the main character of the film. It's thanks to her
incredible courage we received so much truth, and could share it with
you. The film already is a warning for many girls in similiar
situations she has ben in twelve years ago, in her rebel age. |

This documentary follows a group of Palestinian women on the West
Bank. Working together with the Israeli human rights organization
B’Tselem, these courageous Palestinian women use video as a way to
non-violently capture daily human rights violations in their villages.
Their videos are uploaded raw to YouTube by B’Tselem’s Camera Project
in Jerusalem. The footage has gone viral: it has swayed public
opinion, been admitted as evidence in Israeli courts, and resulted in
the convictions of abusive soldiers and their superiors. The
documentary also focuses on the personal lives of Salam, Ayatt and
Nariman, three young Palestinian women: their struggles between
tradition and modernity, between invisibility and international media
attention. Their portraits are built from animation, interviews and
vérité footage, intercut with the alarming scenes that they film.

Jury Statement :
In the Image reflects on the power of the video camera and digital
technology to provide irrefutable testimony. B’Tselem, a Jerusalem
based human rights organization, provides Palestinian women with
access to technology and training, to empower them to use the camera
as an exceptionally power tool of peaceful activism. |

This road movie portrays the perilous journey of well-known intellectual Yassin al-Haj Saleh and young photographer Ziad Homsi through Syria, at a time when the country edges towards the brink. Yassin (53), who spent 16 years in prison for belonging to the Syrian left, goes underground in 2011 to serve Syria’s popular uprising, while Ziad (24) - occasionally fighting with the rebels - takes photographs in his hometown Douma. In this Damascene suburb – where Yassin and his wife Samira Khalil found shelter - the two men meet and become friends. Together, they embark on an adventurous journey through the desert to al-Haj Saleh’s native town Raqqa in Northeast Syria. Upon their arrival, Raqqa is occupied by the "Islamic State in Iraq and Levant" (ISIS), which also kidnapped two brothers of Yassin. Consequently, the thinker leaves for Istanbul to pursue his writing for the revolution, hoping for a reunion with his wife Samira who remained in Douma. Ziad – abducted by ISIS on his way back – rejoins Yassin after his release, hoping to return home soon. All hopes are shattered when Samira gets abducted jointly with human rights lawyer Razan Zeitouneh. And the film ends while Syria tumbles into a yawning abyss.

Jury Statement :
This road movie documentary shows a certain state (2013) during the
war in Syria, when Rakka was still not occupied by the Daesh
terrorists. It shows the troubled trip, the various states of
destruction and free zones, and at the same time the questions that an
intellectual has to pose in wanting to stay in his country but on the
other hand needing to not risk his life. |
