An international jury overview the sections of short films coming from all over the world. We prefer documentaries which succeed in representing the complexity of reality and discover in a new way its sensible and perturbing aspects on the same time accentuating the ambivalent and enigmatic status of reality in avoiding sterotypes and simplifing conclusions.

Out of Frame

Yorgos Zios
Grece
2012 / 0:10:35

In Greece the advertisement in exterior billboards has been recently forbidden. As a result there are hundreds of empty frames that don’t carry any messages. But the empty frames are now the message. And we are out of frame.
Director’s note The empty frames above our heads, picture not only the current social and financial collapse, but at the same time they portray our bare inner world. They directly reflect our blank state of mind, our sentimental void and solitary existence. The empty frames are the contemporary monuments

The Way to Nowhere Island

Kate McNaughton
United Kingdom
2012 / 0:58:30

Tamsin Omond is a rising star of the British environmental movement: a striking, charismatic young activist, who is making headlines taking part in direct actions that regularly get her arrested. But as radical action after radical action fails to convert more people to the cause, she decides to change tactics: the media love her, so why not try and use them to get her message across to a wider audience? Tamsin’s decision to turn herself into an ‘eco-celebrity’ will not be to everyone’s liking, though…
This film is the Quixotic tale of a fascinating, paradoxical character who is desperate to do whatever she can to change the world – even if this comes at the cost of alienating the people closest to her. It raises the question of what kind of person you have to be to become an activist; and of whether the best way to achieve change is to fight against the system, or to change it from within
