On the Border

Yoshiki Nishimura

This work shows ocean trash on the off-season beach in early spring. Many people think it is very unpleasant. It is a serious environmental problem. However, surprisingly it was so captivating and looked awesome like some kind of artworks, ironically. Human irresponsibility and big ocean waves in winter collaborated to make those objects. I shot hundreds of photos, maybe a thousand, and by using a photogrammetry technique those photo images were changed to 3-D models. What I showed in this film is not the reality but the reconstructed reality. Observing the reality from a different perspective is the theme of my works. In this film, we are looking the reality through the eyes of computer graphics. Analog and digital worlds are colliding in this film. Additionally, I showed this film to some Japanese who are from the Tohoku area where we had a terrible tsunami disaster eight years ago. Some of them connected the film to the devastating tragedy. I also showed it to one European. He immediately connected it to the migrant issues. I showed just trash on the beach. However, this film leads people to different interpretations.

The FISDN present film series focused on different countries and regions. This section intends to discover and explore different spaces and cultures with the aim to understand the specific regional, political and social circumstances, do reconstruct the emotional and intellectual spécificities of a special region or country. In this critical work we belief it's essencial to prefer films which rufuse, in its form and expression, the retake of sterotype ways of reality restituition, as an act of resistance in the actual period of "globalisation", which inclins to impose one dominating model of culture and habitutes.
