Blom Risto-Pekka
Finland
2012 / 0:15:00
You come in and ask if something is wrong. The porridge is a bit
burnt, I reply. This experimental documentary is a personal narrative
from the point of view of a stay-at-home dad. The film represents a
new father’s viewpoint as a sort of an outsider in the process of
giving birth and having a child. The anxiety, desperation and an
overdose of family life are illustrated by the use of animated scenes.
Though the father and his emotions about fatherhood are in the main
focus, he stays in the background as a narrator.

Marjo Levlin

The musical composition, The Prison Mother’s Lullaby by Kaija Maarika
Penttala from 2010 was the starting point of the piece. Penttala had
composed it after reading an article about Finnish female prisoners
who serve their sentence in primitive circumstances imprisoned with
their child. By Penttala’s request Marjo Levlin made the video work to
the theme and music. After researching and getting involved in the
subject, an experimental, poetic weave came into being, a symbolistic
piece springing out of the theme.

Jari Silomäki
Finland, Russia
2016 / 0:02:43
In the video, the artist visits the scenes for the major political
murders of the 20th century and takes as many steps as there were
victims in each tragedy. The video depicts the inevitable human
loneliness before significant events and comments on the rhetoric
emerged from the industrial revolution: are the quantity and the size
only factors that can contribute to a fact? The long walk starts in
Russia. The artist is walking on the memorial for the victims of
Stalin’s persecutions in the Krasny Bor forest, Karelia, Russia. One
step for each victim lying in the mass grave. The artist aims at
walking a significant part of the victims of Stalin’s persecution.

The artist’s firstborn son transformed, in the blink of an eye, into a
young man. Q is a conceptual film about forces that change the world.
Q takes us to the end of the worlds, the depths of the ocean and to
the ruins of Atlantis. Q’s destruction is the road to new growth — it
is the only promise of continuity and the emergence of new nations. Q
is shot on 16 mm film whose surface has been hand-coloured. But what
or who is Q ?

Volvano Room

Tommi Matikka
Finland, USA
2016 / 0:11:00
The viewer follows a 5-year-old girl into the depths of an island as
she witnesses wonderous things: The island draws her to the source of
its sweetness, a bridge emerges in the middle of the sea and the dead
are smiling. Volcano Room is a thoroughly poetic short film. The
narrative merges the past reign of large lizards, the borderless
present, and the future that will never come. The viewer is led beyond
fantasy – to an era where the animated dream images force him to take
a deep breath and dive.

The FISDN present film series focused on different countries and regions. This section intends to discover and explore different spaces and cultures with the aim to understand the specific regional, political and social circumstances, do reconstruct the emotional and intellectual spécificities of a special region or country. In this critical work we belief it's essencial to prefer films which rufuse, in its form and expression, the retake of sterotype ways of reality restituition, as an act of resistance in the actual period of "globalisation", which inclins to impose one dominating model of culture and habitutes.
