Derek Woolfenden France
2005 / DV / 0:19:00
On June 29th 1936, Pope Pie XI, adressing to all the catholic bishops in the United States, dedicated his encyclical pontificate Vigilanti Cura to the “cinematic spectacle”, justifying his intervention because of “the sad progress of art and the industry of cinema in the divulgation of sin and vice”. The filmmaker re-uses the title for his movie, in order to turn it away from its original meaning towards its contrary.
