Anarchist Banker

+ Infos

Direction: Jan Peter Hammer
Germany

After the credit crunch: an intense meeting between a talk show host and a banker. Individual freedom proves to be a terribly slippery concept. Insightfully updated version of a short story by poet Fernando Pessoa from 1922. The setting is a talk show immediately after the credit crunch. The guest is a banker without remorse. Eloquently he entraps us and takes us through the incontrovertible logic of high finance.

In 1997, I filmed a sequence - a friend immersing an idol of Ganesha at Chowpati beach, Bombay on the last day of the Ganapati festival. A year later, he committed suicide. After twelve years, I completed the film. Using his footage as the leitmotif, this film is a requiem to a dead friend.

Mokhtar

+ Infos

Direction: Halima Ouardiri
Canada
2010 | Digital | 0:16:00

Based on a true story, Mokhtar recounts the tale of a young boy who lives with his family of goatherds in a remote, Moroccan village. When the boy finds a fallen owl and decides to keep it, despite the fact that the owl is considered a bad omen, his new pet becomes a symbol of rebellion against his family and an icon of his fledgling independence. Kinship, religion and spirituality are all confronted in this astounding story that celebrates inner and outer strength.
