Chinese Carnival 2009 explores the exuberance and optimism in China today. The China Carnival series portrays the country as a frenzied fun park where Chairman Mao gives his blessing to roller-coaster riders, romantic love merges happily with shopping, and the sky is too blue to be true. But there’s a grim subtext to these pictures, seen in the identical faces and robotic poses of the crowds, and in the red balloons that resemble spatters of blood.

The Last Villagers
+ Infos

Hai Du, Daniel Goodman
China
2011 | Digital | 0:16:00

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most densely populated areas, almost all seven million HongKongers are clustered in the urban area. It is not hard to imagine that the agricultural lands in Hong Kong have been shrinking. Thousands of families emptied out of rural villages to move to the rapidly growing urban areas to find better-paid jobs. More and more rural villages have been virtually abandoned by their inhabitants. The Last Villagers is a film which explores the way people use space and how that changes over time. The documentary tells a story regarding a remote and nearly deserted village in Hong Kong called Fung Hang, near the Hong Kong and the main land China border. The film looks at the lives of the last two elderly inhabitants of the village, Mr. Cheung (83) and his sister-in-law Ms. Wong (73), and uses a video journal style to show how their Hakka traditions and life style are disappearing.

FISDN 2011 : Honoring the (different) Worlds : Pointing Out

October 5th to 16th 2011

We present film series focused on 16 different countries and regions. This section intends to discover and explore different spaces and cultures with the aim to understand the specific regional, political and social circumstances, do reconstruct the emotional and intellectual spécificities of a special region or country. In this critical work we belief it's essencial to prefer films which rufuse, in its form and expression, the retake of sterotype ways of reality restituition, as an act of resistance in the actual period of "globalisation", which inclins to impose one dominating model of culture and habitutes.
