International Competition - Festival 2010

April 5th -  10th

 

Ten selections of short films will be submitted to the international jury of the festival. Contemporary movies, from all the countries, chosen for their esthetical audacity, their intuition and their complex attitude towards the modern world

She tries to conjure up memories of his face, but all she has left are the few blurred photographs she took clandestinely – and the desire to reconstruct the illusion she had before their meeting.

Alone in his kitchen in Bucharest, Dorel prepares for what seems to be a party. Actually, it’s his son’s wedding which takes place in the USA. Dorel is going to watch the wedding through a webcam toghether with two of his son’s friends. On the small display they are going to meet the bride, her father and will witness the ceremony. A bitter-sweet story about scattered families and lonely parents.

Herzog takes the love duet "O Soave Fanciulla" ("Oh Gentle Angel") from Act One of the opera and sets it to images of the Mursi people in southwest Ethiopia. The film is part of a project sponsored by the English National Opera and the satellite channel Sky Arts in which directors were asked to reimagine an operatic number in purely visual terms.

Un document étrange, évoquant le Kazakstan traditionnel aux prises avec l’exode et le déracinement contemporains.

„Exodus“ is showing a weared off tradition in the present Kazakhstan, like a strange and powerful tale. Men and women are in the process of packing up their Yurtas (nomadic tents). An ancient shamanistic normad ritual „The Closing Road“ is persecuted, only perceived by a girl, who is icaptivated by what is ment to be left behind.
Exodus is on the same time evoking the global uprooting.

In a village in Lucania, during the night somebody is walking alone, filming himself and telling a story throughthe camera. His account of the four suicides seauentially occurred in Lucania fradually shifts in an analysis of Italy's current condition. It is a solitary meditation in which two words are ruthlessly repeated: "Mediocrity! Mediocrity!"

In Undertow Eyes, Vera and Gabriel, an elderly couple, navigate through past and present, telling their own life story. Their remembering, rendered in images from family archives that confound themselves with images of the present, suggests a personal diary on love and death.
